🌃 Colmar: A city to enjoy without restraint!
For Georges Duhamel (who wrote it in 1931), Colmar was the "most beautiful city in the world"… It has also often been claimed that it was the most Alsatian of the cities of Alsace!
Without entering into a bidding war of superlatives, Colmar remains without doubt an absolutely exceptional city for the richness and variety of its historical and architectural heritage.
It is located near Germany and Switzerland, between the Vosges and the Rhine, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. The city offers visitors a striking shortcut through more than a thousand years of European history. Moreover, Colmar retains, with its 67,000 inhabitants, an endearing side of a "city in the countryside" which makes up all its charm.
Despite the ups and downs of a turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve an exceptional homogeneity of its historic centre which, classified as a "protected sector", has benefited from permanent restoration and enhancement. The vast pedestrian zone of the old town allows visitors to admire the countless treasures of a heritage as rich as it is varied, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Whether it is the House of Heads (erected in the early 17th century) which owes its name to the 111 heads that adorn its façade, or the Pfister House, a fine bourgeois residence of the Renaissance period but of medieval design, each of its monuments is unique in its kind.
The religious art of Colmar is moreover very rich: the Church of the Dominicans which houses the famous "Virgin in the Rose Bush" by Alsatian painter and engraver Martin Schongauer, as well as the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin are wonderful examples of pure and sober Gothic art, of great austerity.
Wandering through the streets, the visitor, amazed, discovers the numerous and beautiful shop signs, the roofs with shimmering colours... Strolling along the Fish Market quay, formerly the nerve centre of fishing and fish sales, one falls under the spell of this picturesque district, now called "Little Venice".
